Exposing Hidden Red Flags of Domestic Abuse

The Co-operative Bank and Refuge launch a campaign to spotlight unnoticed signs of domestic abuse, raising awareness and supporting survivors.

A Campaign to Highlight the Unnoticed Signs of Abuse

The Co-operative Bank has joined forces with the women’s charity Refuge to launch a powerful campaign that aims to shed light on the ‘red flags’ of domestic abuse—many of which often go unnoticed.

This initiative stems from new research commissioned by Refuge, revealing that the scale of domestic abuse may be significantly underestimated. Shockingly, only 26% of UK adults are aware that 1 in 4 women will experience domestic abuse in their lifetime. This statistic underscores the urgent need for awareness campaigns that educate the public on the various forms of abuse that can occur within relationships.

Domestic abuse is not always physical. While bruises and visible injuries may be the most recognizable signs, many victims suffer in silence through financial control, coercion, and emotional manipulation. This campaign aims to ensure that these warning signs are identified and addressed before they escalate into physical harm or long-term psychological damage.

Recognizing the Less Obvious Forms of Abuse

The research also highlighted a concerning gap in awareness. While nearly 80% of people would report physical abuse, recognition of other forms—such as coercive control, economic abuse, and psychological abuse—is much lower. Only 39% of respondents indicated that they would report these more subtle, yet equally harmful, forms of abuse.

According to Abigail Ampofo, interim CEO at Refuge, "Domestic abuse often operates in the shadows, manifesting in subtle, insidious ways that are hard to recognise. As technology and cultural norms evolve, abuse becomes more difficult to spot."

Coercive control, for instance, can involve isolating a victim from their family and friends, monitoring their whereabouts, or restricting their financial freedom. Economic abuse may include withholding access to money, sabotaging employment opportunities, or forcing financial dependence. These forms of abuse create an invisible cage around the victim, making it difficult for them to seek help or escape their situation.

A Campaign to Make Red Flags Impossible to Ignore

The campaign seeks to give survivors a voice, ensuring that the warning signs of abuse are not overlooked. "We want women to know they are not alone, and Refuge is here to support them," Ampofo emphasized.

The campaign launch coincides with Women’s History Month and is being shared with Co-operative Bank customers to drive awareness. By educating the public on the red flags of abuse, the campaign aims to shift societal perceptions and encourage people to take action when they suspect someone may be in danger.

A Striking Installation at Outernet London

To further amplify the message, an installation at Outernet London features around 100 physical red flags mirrored on digital screens. Each flag displays a quote from a domestic abuse survivor, illustrating the many ways abuse can manifest and remain unreported.

The visual impact of these red flags serves as a stark reminder that abuse takes many forms. It is a call to action for individuals, communities, and institutions to become more vigilant and proactive in recognizing and addressing domestic abuse.

Maria Cearns, chief operating officer at The Co-operative Bank, stated: “It’s astonishing that so many women, and by extension, so many of our customers, will experience abuse in their lifetime. We’re incredibly proud to continue our work with Refuge and to support this campaign, raising awareness of the abusive red flags that are all too common in relationships."

The bank's involvement highlights the role that financial institutions can play in addressing domestic abuse. By providing financial resources, offering discreet banking services for survivors, and connecting customers with support networks, banks can be powerful allies in the fight against domestic violence.

Support and Resources Are Available

The Co-operative Bank reassures its customers that, through its relationships with local and national domestic abuse services, help is available for those in need. Many survivors face barriers when trying to leave abusive situations, including financial insecurity and lack of access to essential resources. Banks, charities, and support networks can work together to provide safe pathways for victims to regain independence.

If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic abuse, Refuge offers confidential support and guidance. Awareness is the first step toward change, and by understanding the warning signs and knowing where to seek help, we can all play a part in breaking the cycle of abuse.

This collaboration between The Co-operative Bank and Refuge is a crucial step toward increasing awareness and providing essential support for survivors of domestic abuse. By bringing these hidden red flags into the spotlight, the campaign empowers individuals to recognize abuse, speak up, and take action toward a safer society for all.
