Created by Droga5 Aotearoa, part of Accenture Song, the campaign, aptly titled The Bacteria That Grew a Campaign, brings the science of gut health to life by highlighting the beauty of bacteria. Rather than seeing bacteria through the lens of sickness and disease, the campaign embraces the positive role that ‘good’ bacteria play in our overall wellness. It presents these microscopic organisms not just as essential to our health, but as beautiful in their own right.

At the heart of this campaign lies the use of art to represent the invisible, often misunderstood, world of gut bacteria. Droga5 Aotearoa's creative team turned simple agar plates into a beautiful canvas, using them to cultivate bacterial growth patterns. The bacteria in question, Bacillus coagulans, which is a key ingredient in No Ugly Gut, was used to create visually striking patterns that reflect the vibrancy and importance of a thriving gut microbiome. These microscopic patterns were captured in high detail, showing how the delicate art of bacterial growth mirrors the beauty of a healthy gut.

By using real bacteria, the team wanted to reinforce the message that gut health is not only about function but about beauty, too. To ensure the science behind the campaign was accurate and compelling, No Ugly teamed up with leading microbiologist Dr. Siouxsie Wiles. As an expert in the field, Dr. Wiles played a pivotal role in designing the bacterial growth to reflect the ideal microbiome. Dr. Wiles herself says, "One of the things I like about doing these kinds of art projects is that when people hear the word bacteria, they often think of pandemics and disease. However, there are lots and lots of species of bacteria, and many of them are really good — many we couldn’t live without. I love that we can take something invisible and make it visible, to show just how beautiful bacteria can be."
